Today, I received a message from my lawyer congratulating me on the official resolution of the iScraper (ProAPIs, Inc.) legal dispute. This was the most relaxing news I’ve had in a while, so I decided to write this post and let my readers know who used iScraper in the past, or who didn’t use iScraper but might be interested in the current status. I have documented the journey here, including key events, if you are interested.

How did iScraper come to be?

From 2015 to 2020, I worked as a freelance backend developer on Upwork. During that time, I also built side projects. One of those projects was a Google SERPs API that later became SerpsBot.

One day, I found a job post where the client was looking for a developer to set up a proxy network. As this was one of my areas of expertise, I applied and got a response from the client. During our communication, I learned they wanted to self-host a proxy to scrape Google SERPs. I asked the client to try my Google SERPs API, and they agreed. This client became a heavy user of my SERPs API, and he kept using SerpsBot until very recently.

In 2021, the same client asked if I could provide the public data from a professional social network. I looked into it and soon figured out how to reliably extract publicly available data from that network. I initially offered this API as a private service to that single customer, then expanded to other customers by going public, and it became iScraper.

In the following years, iScraper kept growing. During this period, I learned a lot about developing and maintaining highly available, reliable services that solve business problems. I also came to understand the real meaning of the phrase “Data is the new oil.” which was coined back in 2006 by Clive Humby.

The legal dispute

In early 2025, another firm, ProxyCurl, was sued by the same professional network, and my company, ProAPIs, the parent entity of iScraper, got sued in October 2025. This was very stressful for me at first, as I had to shut everything down suddenly without any prior notice to my customers.

The opponent was a mighty company with practically unlimited resources, and they were also going to get the court’s favor because they were the “victims.”

The Resolution

But thanks to my counsel’s expert guidance, I navigated this tough challenge. I didn’t try to fight over whether every claim the social network made was true or false. Because I didn’t have enough resources. My only priority was to settle this case and move on to my new ventures.

Finally, the case is officially resolved. This was a tough journey, and it taught me a lot, including strengthening my technical knowledge and showing me that we shouldn’t build our businesses on a fragile foundation.
